Freakin' Dishwasher.
David and I spent Thanksgiving at the cabin. We ran the dishwasher after breakfast on the day we left. We cleaned the cabin and loaded the car and headed back to Folsom...
December 29: FINALLY! We were going back to the cabin. Finals - done. Christmas - past. Time for some relaxation and SNOW PLAY! We got to the cabin and the front door wouldn't open. Weird. We could hear the battery indicator on the smoke or CO detector. Time to change the batteries! I trudged around back and had a hard time opening the back door, too.
And stepped in to a sauna. Way warmer than usual. Tropical. And I could hear something running, and the dang smoke detector.
It was the dishwasher. Why was the dishwasher running? And why couldn't I see out the windows? And squish.
Water. All over the kitchen. The dishwasher was spewing hot water. And it wouldn't turn off.
Valves. Insurance company. Mopping. Lots of mopping. Serv-Pro vans. Industrial dehumidifiers. Demolition crews.
When all was said and done, a defective, one-and-a-half-year-old dishwasher had destroyed several layers of subfloor and all of the lower cabinets - which meant the upper cabinets had to go, too. Ironically, the vinyl flooring we just put in last summer was perfectly fine. The stuff really is waterproof.
It is now mid-February. All-Sierra Construction is replacing the window, re-insulating and adding a vapor barrier to the kitchen, and fixing the subfloor. I'll be picking flooring soon and KB Kitchens and Baths will be replacing the cabinets.
We miss our cabin. We're very, very hopeful that it will be better than ever when the repairs are finished. I try not to think about how much work we did. And I haven't been able to go back. My friend Dave Hamilton took the demo pictures on January 9th. I know if I see everything piled up and the place all gutted that I'll be a mess. So I avoid, and wait and hope for better days.

I knew it was bad when I saw the countertop. This was about the time I noticed the floor was soggy.

The condensation was unbelievable! Water was pouring down all the windows and froze in the kitchen sill. This is upstairs in the loft.

This is roughly where the range was. Every single layer of flooring and the original subfloor was completely shot.
